Who we are
Sylke Funk, founder of UBUNTU, has lived in Hout Bay since 2006. She is a social worker and family therapist and is involved in several projects in Hout Bay and Imizamo Yethu, the local township. Good and inspiring education and social work together with individual attention are indicative and important for the way out of poverty and violence in the township structures. This way we can encourage the children to take their future into their own hands. As a family therapist, Sylke is convinced that if we want to change the lives of children, we need to include the families.
Stanley is a Hout bay local, and has been involved with Ubuntu since 2016, officially taking up the position of volunteer liaison in 2017. As a black South African, Stan provides a locals insight into the culture and ecosystem to the volunteers and is always willing to offer advices. During the day Stan works fulltime as a primary school teacher and has found his passion in molding the youth of tomorrow: HE firmly believes for South Africa to change and truly become a rainbow nation, the youth needs to be supported through education and instilling proper values that they can carry with them for life. When Stan is not in school or working with the volunteers, you can expect to find him practicing his dancing or ensuring the volunteers stay is a pleasant one.
Meanwhile UBUNTU support more and more new projects in Imizamo Yethu. With the continuous use of volunteers and interns, we offer disadvantaged people the support they need. At the same time, we enable our students with the special and valuable experience of helping people, primarily in their social environment …… and this is the most beautiful ‘end of the world’. UBUNTU works with various teachers, social workers, speech therapists and occupational therapists in High Schools, Primary Schools and After Care Centres.
We also get support from various people in the Netherlands, Germany and the US. They help us practically and financially. They provide us with their ideas and enthusiasm. We are in close contact with Universities, colleges, schools, churches etc in the Netherlands, Germany and the US.
