Ubuntu community
As part of this program, we support special community projects in their valuable work.
We started this program 5 years ago. With the help of some sponsors we created a music and recording studio with many instruments and a professional recording installation from Apple, with a locked recording room and a secured music room. Through Corona, we could no longer use the studio. After that, due to financial reasons, we were no longer able to finance the rather costly project. Unfortunately the music teacher and producer became too expensive for us. The project was given to our friend Mhinti Pato’s wonderful youth organization, Sakhisiswe YPD. We have been supporting her and her organization for a long time. Lelothando Bokuva is leading the project. We have known him for a long time as well. The project’s transfer, from our organization to their’s is in complete alignment with our motto of Ubuntu. Why shoulder the burden alone, when it is better to do so together. Our cooperation with Sakhisiswe has proven to be fruitful and the studio is being fully used again.
Sakhisizwe is a youth organization that creates an afternoon program for 13 to 25 year old youth. Through homework supervision, study clubs, lifeskill lessons and various sports activities, the young people are encouraged to take school and education seriously. The young adults are encouraged and supported to study and take responsibility for themselves in the mentoring program. www.sakhisizweydp.com
Volunteers who would like to work in this project are heartily welcome. We are happy to forward them to Mhinti and Lelo.
This non-profit organization is dedicated to uniting, promoting and supporting the Hout Bay community through soccer. Children receive free training at the highest level and play year round through the game they all love, Soccer. By providing logistics, organization, management and coaching to the players*, the club hopes to nurture and support talent from all corners of Hout Bay and enable the children to achieve their dreams on the pitch and in their daily lives.
However, HBUFC is more than a soccer club and more than a charity. They combine the two and are an ambitious, competitive and highly motivated organization where elite players, idols and mentors from Hout Bay and ImizamoYethu have fought their way up to the top of the 2nd Division and have their sights firmly set on promotion to the National First Division (NFD) and now the PSL, South Africa’s premier soccer league.
HBUFC and UBUNTU for Africa work closely together: whether it is in the context of disaster relief or that HBUFC provides our volunteers with a roof over their heads. Some of their players are even helping out in our After Care.
Ubuntu 4 All was formed as a result of a youth gang war in the township of IY (Imizamo Yethu) in Hout Bay. The volunteer organization was already working with volunteers at two schools when several youth were murdered. That was the start of UBUNTU 4 ALL, together against Gangsterism, an NGO that aims to give young people a way out of youth gangs. They were able to hire their first staff and together with Sylke they took on the work to defuse the grim situation in the township. The German NGO has invested many thousands of euros in this youth program. We financed monthly camps where we worked therapeutically with the youth. We have listened to them and (re)connected them. Our German association has disbursed a total of 21,088 Euros for camps and youth projects. This NGO has been standing on its own two years. Since then, unfortunately, no more camps have taken place. Our plan is to finance a camp for delinquent boys in 2023.
Emergency aid after the biggest fire in the history of IY
Due to the poor conditions in IY, we were used to gas bottles exploding or candles falling over on a regular basis, resulting in minor fires. In March 2016, however, a third of the entire township burned down. Several thousand people were left homeless and traumatized. Our association mobilized a total of 22,735 euros and this went to the victims of the fire disaster. We have built some new houses, but above all we have provided furniture, emergency aid and a therapeutic camp for children and for young people.
During the Corona quarantine period in March and April 2020, many families did not earn any money and therefore had no means to support themselves. That is why we had started a fundraising campaign. In collaboration with a local organization, HBUFC and the Home Heroes, we supported numerous families with food packages. A food package costs 425 Rand (25 Euro) for a family, which was enough for 2 weeks. We spent more than 30 000 Euro on food packages and support. Sylke stood in the township at least 3 times a week to personally hand out these packages. During the quarantine, she met people at the supermarket, shopped with them, handed out shopping vouchers and spoke encouraging words to people. We also supported Mama Sindi in starting her own soup kitchen. Mama Sindi and her team are now an independent organization and still cook for hundreds of children every day of the week.
All projects mentioned here in UBUNTU COMMUNITY but also other NGOs and community projects can apply for support. Our board will then check if this project fits to us and can be supported.
